This session will introduce various ways in which it is possible to control which users or groups can see or access content in Moodle. The basics of creating groups and user overrides will be discussed, along with approaches to use access controls appropriately. Within Moodle, access controls can be applied to individual items, such as a Quiz or Assignment, or to entire blocks of content for, e.g., project groups or different course sections within the same Moodle site.

The gradebook in Moodle is an extremely powerful and flexible tool, but at times it can appear complex and unwelcoming. The purposes of this session are first to provide a comprehensive walkthrough of common gradebook tasks and workflows, and second, to provide time both for specific questions and for hands-on assistance with gradebook configuration. Topics covered will include: adding grade items both automatically and manually, understanding gradebook aggregation and weighting, qualitative vs. quantitative grading, and controlling what your students see.

Creating and choosing content with accessibility in mind provides all students with equitable access to learning resources. This session will cover best practices in accessibility as well as tools available for creating accessible course content.

Interactive videos can be used for flipped classrooms, remote instruction, providing demos or tutorials, or as an alternative way to deliver course content. This session covers the basics of creating interactive video content, the available screen capture tools, and effective ways for engaging students with the content.

The Quiz module in Moodle offers a powerful and flexible tool for assessment, though it can be overwhelming. The purpose of this session is to demonstrate how to create a simple quiz, as well as to cover more advanced topics such as question bank management and implementing overrides to, e.g., time limits and number of attempts for specific students. In addition, alternatives to using the Quiz module will be offered to ensure that attendees understand the capabilities and limitations of the tool depending on requirements.

Moodle supports several workflows for grading submitted work, including the standard grading interface, quick grading, manual entry, and offline markup. This session will discuss each approach, covering when they might be most appropriate, so that attendees can select the best grading method for their courses and specific assignments.

Using Notability, a robust freeform writing and drawing tool for iPad, can be used as a way to convey “board work” during remote course instruction. Notability when paired with Moodle Assignments, can be used to annotate digitally submitted assignments and returned to students by way of a bulk upload to the same Moodle Assignment.

Moodle offers a variety of different resources and activities for delivering course content to students. This session will focus on those that can be assigned a grade in the Moodle gradebook.
January 21 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and January 25 from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Perusall is a powerful and flexible external tool that can connect with your Moodle course, offering a collaborative reading and commenting platform for course material. This session will discuss how to use Perusall to facilitate collaborative discussions around documents, textbooks, web sites, and video content. More advanced topics will also be covered, such as optional grading, options for large classes, and even accessibility-related tools such as reading aloud.

Think you know everything about Zoom? This session will cover tips and tricks for effectively scheduling and using Zoom or Google Meet for remote classes, virtual office hours, etc.
